Women's hair is the cause of the jerky noise of wireless microphones

I'm Yamakawa @HSR_YB, a sound reformer whose main business is to improve the sound quality of video and audio data.

The other day, I helped improve the sound quality of the teaching materials used for e-learning teaching materials.

Noise missed in wireless microphone recording

The material of the client who produces video teaching materials on a daily basis is a wireless microphone recording the voice of the instructor in charge. Appropriate noise processing was applied. However, it was said that there was a problem with the noise that was not noticed at the time of recording, and that the sound quality was NG.

The cause of "ziri-ziri noise" is that the instructor was a woman with medium hair. It seems that her hair was touching the pin microphone part as her body moved. The wireless microphone, which is a high-sensitivity condenser microphone, makes a sound every time the hair touches it.

Noise at zero distance from the microphone is tough

The hair that has touched the microphone directly and the microphone are at zero distance. Even the slightest noise is quite powerful. It was almost like the noise of the wireless microphone and the cloth rubbing of clothes, which tend to be drama content. (A hidden pin microphone is rubbed by the acting movement of the actor)

If the noise is close to the rubbing noise, it cannot be removed by the normal noise suppressor used to reduce the environmental noise.

RX8 De-rustle that can reduce cloth rubbing noise

Since it is in a state close to the rubbing sound of cloth, I used the De-rustle of IZotope RX 8 for restoration. This is a plug-in module dedicated to removing cloth rubbing noise, which is used in post-production of movie works.

De-rustle can be strongly removed. However, since the cloth rubbing sound is mixed in many of the bands, if the removal setting is made boldly, the original material will be seriously damaged and a sense of discomfort may remain.

In fact, to deal with the "jerky noise" that occurs when you touch the microphone directly, you need to do some strong processing. It's a very difficult decision to adjust. The important point is how much noise is removed and how to recover the missing voice component. In this project, we not only raised the treble range with an equalizer, but also finely adjusted the TAPE saturator and finished it.

Repairing troubled audio is rarely solved with a single plug-in

Repairing troubled voices requires complex processing in most cases. It is rare that one plug-in can solve all problems. Choosing a prescription that gives the right amount of treatment is of utmost importance. Even if you get the latest software and watch the video manual, you need experience to get good results.

To be honest, even as a professional who handles hundreds of sound quality improvements a year, it is difficult to judge whether or not it can be improved without actually processing the audio material in question.
